Nardil (Phenelzine Suflate) Drug Class

Nardil (Phenelzine Suflate) Drug Class

Nardil (Phenelzine Sulfate) belongs to the Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor Class (MAOI) drug class which was developed in the 1950’s. This class of anti-depressants is arguably far superior to any of the newer SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) medications. MAOIs are the original anti-depressants and still the best.

Nardil (Phenelzine Sulfate) Best Antidepressant for Social Anxiety

Many doctors have acknowledged that MAOIs are far superior to SSRI’s in treating depression and social anxiety. It is thought that this superiority is due to the fact that, unlike SSRI’s, which generally only increase the levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin, MAOIs also increase the levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, and (in Nardil’s case) even GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid). Many MAOI users can confirm that SSRIs are mere “pistols”, while MAOIs are “cannons”. Many patients who trial SSRI’s may have a dopamine deficiency, and therefore receive no benefit from SSRI treatment since SSRIs reduce dopamine levels (possibly via 5HT2C receptor activity). Dopamine is also responsible for motivation, which is why people on MAOIs often claim they feel much more motivated to do things in life.

Due to its mechanism on GABA, Nardil (Phenelzine Sulfate) is excellent in reducing social anxiety. Like benzodiazepines (e.g. Valium, Xanax), Nardil increases GABA. Therefore, many people who take Nardil no longer need to take benzodiazepines for anxiety.
